Belizean referee Andy Albeño appointed to VAR duty at Concacaf Under-20 Championship

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Belizean official is making an impact on the international stage. The Football Federation of Belize has announced the appointment of Andy Albeño as a VAR and AVAR referee at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship in Toluca, Mexico.

In its congratulatory message, the FFB said the prestigious assignment reflects Albeño’s expertise and commitment, along with the confidence Concacaf continues to place in Belizean match officials, and wished him a successful tournament as he proudly represents Belize on the regional stage.

The appointment is a notable one. Video Assistant Referee duty is among the most specialized roles in modern football officiating, requiring certified training in the technology, complete command of the laws of the game, and the composure to review match-defining moments, goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity, in real time from the video operations room. As AVAR, the assistant role, officials support that review process across multiple camera angles while play continues.

Selection for those seats at a continental youth championship places Albeño among a trusted pool of regional officials, and every such assignment strengthens the pathway for Belizean referees at higher levels of the game.
