*House Judiciary Committee Democrats have opened an investigation into allegations that FBI Director Kash Patel has exhibited a pattern of alcohol abuse that, according to lawmakers, could pose national security risks. In a letter led by Ranking Member Rep. Jamie Raskin, Democrats asked Patel to provide detailed information, including the results of a standardized Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), a widely used screening tool for identifying harmful drinking patterns.
Members said the Committee needs clarity on issues such as how frequently Patel drinks, whether alcohol has interfered with his duties, and whether he has experienced memory lapses or other impairments linked to drinking. They argued that the allegations — if accurate — raise serious concerns about Patel’s ability to lead the FBI.
In a separate letter to Chairman Jim Jordan, Democrats urged bipartisan cooperation and said the Committee must be prepared to compel Patel’s testimony under oath if he does not comply with document requests by the stated deadline.
The inquiry follows a report from The Atlantic describing alleged episodes of excessive drinking, unexplained absences, and behavior that sources said affected Patel’s performance during major investigations. The article also referenced viral footage of Patel drinking in the Team USA locker room during a taxpayer‑funded trip to the Olympics in Italy. On Monday Patel filed a lawsuit against the publication and its reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick on Monday after the publication wrote an article that included anonymous claims alleging Patel has had “conspicuous inebriation and unexplained absences.” He rejected to claims on Tuesday at a press event.
“I’ve never been intoxicated on the job, and that is why we filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit,” Patel said.
He spoke to his work ethic telling the reporters that he has “taken half as many days off as those before me” and that the FBI and DOJ Department “dropped the murder rate 20 points.”
Democrats say Patel’s alleged conduct would violate federal law and the Department of Justice Ethics Handbook, which bars employees from habitually using intoxicating beverages to excess. They argue that the claims — combined with Patel’s public refusal to address them directly — underscore the need for formal oversight.
Lawmakers are requesting that Patel submit:
- A completed AUDIT questionnaire
- A sworn statement verifying the accuracy of his responses
- All security‑clearance questionnaires
- Relevant communications related to the Committee’s inquiry
They maintain that without full cooperation, the Committee cannot adequately assess potential risks to FBI operations.
