Albert Einstein and Marian Anderson: Friendship Across Lines of Race and Faith with Deborah Brevoort, Sheldon Epps and Nadine Epstein

Tuesday, May 5 at 1pm, ET / 10am, PT

In 1937, Albert Einstein and acclaimed contralto Marian Anderson became lifelong friends after Einstein invited Anderson to stay at his home when she was denied a hotel room in Princeton, New Jersey because of her race. Two years later, Anderson was barred from singing at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC and instead performed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Inspired by these true events, playwright Deborah Brevoort imagines the conversations that might have taken place between Einstein and Anderson in her play My Lord, What a Night. Join Brevoort and director Sheldon Epps for a discussion of the play and how it explores the intersection of racial prejudice and antisemitism through the unlikely friendship between Anderson and Einstein. In conversation with Moment Editor-in-Chief Nadine Epstein. This program is part of The Wide River Project which takes a deep dive—and a fresh look—into the issues that both unite and divide the Black and Jewish communities.

My Lord, What a Night runs through May 17 at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, NJ.
