DR Congo head coach Sebastien Desabre was delighted with his side’s 1-1 draw with Portugal on their return to the global stage after 54 years.
Joao Neves gave the Portuguese an early lead but Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa headed home at the stroke of halftime to salvage a point for the Leopards.
“The players showed incredible commitment and selflessness,” Desabre told the post-match press briefing.
“We executed the game plan exactly as we wanted, scored from a set piece, and honestly, I am very proud of my players because they represented the Congo in a very positive way and the entire country deserves it,” added the former Uganda Cranes coach.
The Leopards will face Colombia in their second match on June 24 while Portugal and Ronaldo will face Uzbekistan who lost 3-1 to Colombia on their debut.
