INDIAN High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, told The Globe and Mail that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Canada in December to sign a free trade agreement with Canada that is expected to be finalized by November.
Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters in New York that Modi would be coming to Canada near the end of the year.
Patnaik told The Globe and Mail that he also expects the two leaders to sign agreements on defence and aerospace.
Meanwhile, International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, who was in India with a team of more than 50 people, said on Monday on X that he had a successful round of negotiations on the Canada–India trade agreement.
Earlier, he said: “Canada and India had $30.8 billion in two-way trade in 2024. Our goal is to more than double that to $70 billion by 2030.
“From agriculture and agri-food to energy, critical minerals, AI and tech, aerospace, and defence, a CEPA [Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement] can open more doors for Canadian businesses in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing markets.”
