KLY Teases A Groove-Heavy Hip-Hop Track Ahead Of Release. South African singer and songwriter KLY is putting a question to the culture: can hip-hop still make people dance?
The Midrand-raised artist recently took to Instagram with a Reel teasing an unreleased track, suggesting that the streets are already calling for the record to be played loud and enjoyed on the dancefloor.
“The streets are saying I must let this one rock the streets and have the people dancing, what do you think?” KLY wrote. “Can yall still dance to hiphop music actually?”
It is a playful question, but it also speaks to a part of KLY’s musical identity that goes back long before he became known for his smooth vocals and trap-soul sound.
Before establishing himself as a singer, KLY was a dancer and performed at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He was also part of the internationally recognised 300cru krump crew, giving him a strong connection to movement and street culture that continues to influence his artistry.
That background makes the latest teaser particularly interesting. Instead of simply previewing another laid-back R&B or introspective record, KLY appears to be reaching for something built to get listeners moving.
His catalogue has shown that versatility before.
