Ngurare urges lawyers to use ‘legal common sense’

Prime minister Elijah Ngurare has warned members of the legal fraternity against using legal processes to harass people, urging them to apply what he calls “legal common sense”.

Ngurare made the call while delivering closing remarks on behalf of vice president Lucia Witbooi at a three-day State of Justice in Namibia conference held in Windhoek on Friday.

The prime minister criticised what he described as “spider web laws” that catch small insects while allowing big birds to escape.

The conference examined challenges facing Namibia’s justice system and explored a disruptive, performance-based and transformative approach to improving justice delivery.

“I call for stronger institutional collaboration, enabling funding, improved access to justice and enhanced cooperation between states and regional bodies,” he said.

Ngurare urged justice institutions to integrate their information and communication technology systems while maintaining data sovereignty, saying technology should help make the justice system more responsive and accessible.

The conference brought together representatives from Namibia’s justice fraternity to discuss reforms aimed at strengthening the justice system and improving its performance and responsiveness.
