The Zambian government has rolled out the SmartCare Pro Electronic Health Record (EHR) system to approximately 80 percent of health facilities across the country, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to digitise healthcare delivery and improve access to quality medical services.
The progress was announced by SMART Zambia National Coordinator, Percy Chinyama, during a courtesy visit to Senior Chief Ndungu in Zambezi District, North-Western Province. According to SMART Zambia, the deployment of the digital health platform has significantly reduced patient waiting times while improving service delivery across health facilities nationwide.
The government said the SmartCare Pro rollout forms part of its broader digital transformation agenda aimed at modernising public services and strengthening the country’s healthcare system through the adoption of digital technologies.
In addition to the health sector, SMART Zambia has commenced the distribution of Smart Boards to schools, prioritising rural learning institutions in an effort to bridge the digital divide between rural and urban learners and improve access to technology-enabled education.
The government also announced plans to equip traditional leaders with ICT communication tools as part of efforts to promote inclusive digital transformation. The initiative is intended to ensure that rural communities and traditional authorities are fully integrated into Zambia’s growing digital economy.
Senior Chief Ndungu welcomed the government’s digital programmes, noting that the initiatives would benefit communities in his chiefdom by improving access to ICT resources in schools and supporting the implementation of local development programmes.
The visit was attended by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Evans Muhanga, North-Western Province Permanent Secretary Colonel Grandson Katambi (Retired), and other government officials, reflecting the government’s coordinated approach to expanding digital services and infrastructure across Zambia.
