THE Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation has directed staff to continue providing lifeguarding services at nine outdoor beaches this summer, with the exception of Trout Lake. These beaches are Spanish Banks West, Spanish Banks East, Locarno, Jericho, Kitsilano, Sunset, English Bay, Second and Third Beach.

Commissioners made the decision in an in-camera meeting in response to a proposal earlier this spring to reduce outdoor lifeguarding to the five Vancouver beaches which see the most visitation, swimming, and the highest number of interventions.

“This was a difficult decision in the current fiscal environment but we need to make sure our beaches are safe,” said Park Board Chair Tom Digby on Friday. “We have a long history of having excellent beach lifeguarding in Vancouver, and residents expect that.”

The Board has approved a one-time reallocation of funding in its 2026 budget to pay for lifeguard staffing at the nine sites this summer. Ongoing funding for these services will need to be established as part of the Park Board’s 2027 budgeting process.
