A Small Soup Kitchen Making a Big Difference in the Heart of Gugulethu

Jackie’s Soup Kitchen is reminding struggling families that even in the hardest times, they are seen, cared for and never forgotten.

Cape Town, South Africa (19 May 2026) – In the heart of Gugulethu, a small community initiative is quietly making a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable families, children and elderly residents.

Known as Jackie’s Soup Kitchen, this grassroots feeding programme provides warm, nourishing meals to those who might otherwise go without, focusing on individuals and families facing food insecurity in the community.

“What began as a small act of care has grown into a consistent effort to serve those in need with dignity and compassion,” says Jackie’s Soup Kitchen Secretary, Sisi Khoza.

“Each week, we prepare and distribute meals to children, unemployed individuals, and elderly residents who rely on this support as a lifeline.”

What this wonderful team finds most fulfilling about this work is being able to restore dignity, hope, and a sense of care to people of Gugulethu who are going through difficult times.

“A warm meal may seem simple, but for many families and individuals, it represents comfort, compassion, and the reminder that they are not forgotten,” says Sisi.

“Seeing the smiles on people’s faces, especially children and the elderly, and witnessing how the community comes together to support one another is incredibly meaningful. Our soup kitchen is not only about feeding people, but also about creating a space of kindness, unity, and encouragement within Gugulethu.”

Despite the challenges that come with running a community initiative, the gratitude and support that the volunteers receive from the community continue to motivate and inspire them every day.

While resources are limited, the need continues to grow. The soup kitchen is sustained through volunteer effort, small donations, and the belief that no one should go hungry.

The team hopes that sharing their story may inspire others, attract awareness, and possibly connect them with individuals or organisations who may want to support or partner with them in future.
