‘I have paid them £2000 every week for the last 17 weeks. I don’t know what to do anymore’ – Brixton trader’s surprise eviction sparks questions of tenant mistreatment.

William Mejia has been trading in Brixton Village since 2021 in Salpikė, an Afro-Caribbean restaurant with lots of heart which recently went viral on TikTok.
William showed up in the market yesterday (Friday 24th April) to open up as usual only to discover Hondo Enterprise, the market’s management company, had forfeited his shop and locked him out of his place of business.
Mejia said:
“I am so upset and hurt. I am doing all I can to pay them back weekly – £2000 every week on top of service charges and other business costs. I have a family to feed and staff to take care of, and I don’t know what to do anymore!”
William had fallen behind on his payments and agreed to a repayment plan from February 2026 which included a £2000 repayment every week.
This Monday, he was also asked to pay an additional £1000 to cover fire alarm and gas certificates for the unit. He asked to space the payments out over the week – and came on Friday to find his shop forfeited.
“It is no way to do business. I am in shock. Taylor McWilliams and Hondo don’t care what happens to people as long as they get theirs.”
Earlier this week, Willan had received an email from Leon Skevington, representing a credit controller on behalf of Hondo Enterprise. The email read:
“Willian [sic] can you get the £2k weekly payment over to us this afternoon please, we have an urgent deadline to hit and this payment could really help us out.”

Kat Miles, chair of the Brixton Market and Village Traders Association said:
“The treatment of William is absolutely shocking. His repayment plan, which he has been following since February without fail, is not reasonable and would break any business – but William has been doing his best because he wants to stay and trade in our community.
We are appalled by his treatment and demand Hondo Enterprises act to let William back into his shop.”
“The mistreatment of tenants has been the norm in the market but it won’t be tolerated anymore. The community won’t have it, and neither will we.”
William Mejia sought to speak with the management company to get his shop back – but has yet to receive a call, email, or text back.
