The AFRO has learned of the passing of former Maryland state Sen. Nathan C. Irby Jr.

Irby was born in Baltimore, Nov. 7, 1931. He attended Dunbar High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Antioch College in 1972.
A longtime civil servant, Irby represented the Second District on the Baltimore City Council from 1974-1982 before he successfully ran for the Maryland Senate, where the Democratic politician represented the 45th District from 1983 to 1994. Irby also served on a variety of commissions, agencies, task forces and councils, including the Baltimore City Planning Commission, Urban Services Agency, Air Quality Control Advisory Council and Governor’s Advisory Council on AIDS, among others.
