The beauty industry has become increasingly competitive, with more brands entering the market, faster product cycles, and constant pressure to stand out beyond product and price. In this space, brand identity, trust, and genuine human connection matter just as much as formulation, and this is where family-run businesses often really come into their own.
At Dr.PAWPAW, I see us as a family business first and foremost, even as we continue to grow. That approach shapes how we operate day to day, from decision-making to long-term brand building and customer relationships.
A key advantage is accountability. In family businesses, the people behind the brand are often directly involved in running it, creating a strong link between decisions and outcomes. In our case, I oversee sales, finance, and marketing activity, while Pauline leads all new product development, designing and creating each product from the ground up. That level of hands-on involvement means we both have a deep sense of ownership over what we create and how we show up for our customers.
There is also a more human connection. Customers are often engaging directly with the people shaping the brand, rather than through layers of corporate structure, which helps build more personal and consistent relationships over time.
Flexibility is another strength. Family-run businesses can typically respond more quickly to feedback and shifts in the market without the internal complexity that can slow larger organisations.
Alongside this is authenticity. With identifiable people behind the brand, there is greater transparency and a clearer story, which helps build trust in an increasingly crowded and selective market.
Finally, there is a strong sense of community connection. This is reflected across the sector. According to a 2021 PwC survey, the vast majority of UK family businesses are engaged in social responsibility, with 74% supporting local communities and 47% involved in philanthropy or grant-based giving.
While larger corporations play a vital role in scale and accessibility, family businesses offer a different model, one defined by proximity, agility, and visibility. In today’s beauty landscape, those qualities are becoming increasingly powerful differentiators.
