Federal authorities have disclosed new details following the arrest of 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen in connection with the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on April 25, with court filings and law enforcement briefings indicating a highly educated individual whose behavior had raised concerns among family members prior to the attack.
According to officials, Allen holds an academic background including a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in computer science. Professionally, he described himself as an independent game developer and educator, and also worked part-time at an educational institution in Torrance, California, where he received internal recognition for his teaching performance.
Family members told investigators that Allen had no prior criminal record but had recently begun expressing increasingly extreme views, including statements about wanting to “fix” the world. Authorities confirmed that relatives contacted law enforcement shortly before the attack after receiving troubling written materials from him.
Federal investigators recovered what they described as a manifesto from both his hotel room in Washington and his residence in California, with the documents reportedly outlining a clear intent to target officials associated with the Trump administration, suggesting a high degree of premeditation.
Law enforcement sources said Allen had undergone firearms training and frequently visited shooting ranges. At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives.
Investigators are examining his ideological background, which appears to include anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric on social media. Federal election records show he made a small political donation during the 2024 election cycle, and authorities also noted his reported involvement in protest movements and association with a group known as “The Wide Awakes.”
Despite these factors, officials said preliminary findings suggest Allen acted alone, describing the incident as a “lone wolf” attack.
The suspect now faces multiple federal charges, including two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, linked to the shooting of a Secret Service agent who is expected to recover.
If convicted, Allen could face a minimum of 10 years to life in prison on the firearms charges, along with up to 20 years for the assault count, with prosecutors indicating that additional charges may follow.
Authorities are also investigating how he was able to breach security at the high-profile event, with surveillance footage reportedly showing him passing a checkpoint while security personnel were dismantling screening equipment after the president had been seated, raising concerns over procedural vulnerabilities.
President Donald Trump was not injured and later told reporters that the situation had been contained.
Allen is scheduled to appear in federal court on Monday, April 27, as investigators continue to assess the full scope of his planning, motives, and any missed warning signs.
