BAL: Club Africain edge Al Ahly in thriller as Maktown Flyers pick debut win

Oussama Marnaoui hit the decisive three-pointer with seconds on the clock to help Club Africain pick a nail-biting victory over Al-Ahly in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Sahara Conference game on Saturday.

In what seemed like a certain defeat for Club Africain at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, Omar Abada sank one of the most important three-pointers of his career, followed by a couple of free throws, before Marnaoui iced the game as his side overturned a 7-point deficit, with about 15 seconds to play, into victory.

Abada finished with 25 points, while Marnaoui, the other Club Africain player to score in double figures, added 17 points for the winners.

The narrow win underscored Club Africain’s strong start to the tournament, as they demonstrated composure in the closing moments against one of the competition’s most experienced sides.

The result left Club Africain unbeaten after two games, while Al Ahly, who were led by former NBA player Kevin Murphy with 19 points and six rebounds, suffered what should be just a narrow setback in their conference play.

Meanwhile, in the opening game of the day, Nigeria’s Maktown Flyers secured their first-ever BAL victory, defeating fellow debutants JCA Kings of Côte d’Ivoire, 76–68.

The Flyers delivered a composed performance, led by Jawad Adekoya, who scored 20 points, as they controlled key stretches of the game to claim a landmark win in their inaugural BAL campaign.

The result handed JCA Kings a second consecutive defeat in the conference. The Kings were led by Jonathan Cisse, who scored 15 points, while Ugandan wing Robinson Opong scored 14 points.

In the Sunday matchups, Al Ahly take on Senegal’s ASC Ville de Dakar while Maktown Flyers battle hosts FUS Rabat.
