Beach, rainforest or culture? In Belize the answer is yes

The culture people want food, music, and history you can touch. In most of the world, somebody loses that argument. In Belize, nobody does, because this small country delivers all three, often in the same week, sometimes in the same day.

Start with the beach, because the Caribbean here makes an unanswerable opening statement. The Belize Barrier Reef, second largest on Earth, runs the length of the coast, turning the sea into a living aquarium for snorkelers, divers, and fly-fishers. This is a nation of cultures side by side: Garifuna drumming and hudut on the southern coast, Maya villages where chocolate is still made from bean to bar, Mestizo towns fragrant with escabeche and corn, Creole rice and beans perfected in every kitchen, and market mornings in San Ignacio where the whole tapestry shops together. Cultural immersion here is not a scheduled excursion. It is simply what happens when you talk to people.

The practicalities seal the case. Belize speaks English, pegs its dollar two to one to the US dollar, and has never been easier to reach, with a record 1.4 million visitors, new nonstop routes connecting five more American cities this winter, and Canadian service growing from three cities. The world is discovering what a single small country can hold.
