BEL warns of possible load shedding tonight as high demand strains power supply

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize Electricity Limited is warning customers across several parts of the country that they could experience power interruptions tonight as high electricity demand and limited power supply place pressure on the national grid.

BEL issued a tentative load shedding schedule for Wednesday, September 9, explaining that interruptions may be necessary to maintain grid stability because of high demand and limited supply from local generation sources and Mexico’s CFE.

The first period of possible interruptions runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Areas that could be affected include communities along the George Price Highway between Miles 8 and 25, parts of Ladyville, communities in and around San Ignacio, Hopkins, Sittee River, Maya Center, Silk Grass, Kendall and Riversdale.

Parts of the Placencia Peninsula and Independence could also be affected, along with sections of Belize City between Freetown Road and Princess Margaret Drive and areas around King’s Park and Fort George.

A second possible load shedding period is scheduled between 9:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.

That period could affect parts of Corozal, San Ignacio and surrounding communities, several areas along the Hummingbird Highway and numerous communities in southern Belize.

BEL stressed that the schedule is tentative and based on energy demand and generation projections, meaning it can change quickly.

The company explained that load shedding involves deliberately disconnecting sections of the electricity network when necessary to match available generation and prevent instability or collapse of the wider system.

Customers in the listed areas are being advised to prepare for the possibility of interruptions tonight and monitor BEL for updates.
