Belize launches National Music Archive to preserve recorded musical heritage

By Zoila Palma: Today, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Culture, the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), and the Belize Archives and Records Service (BARS), formally launched the Belize Music Archive, a national initiative dedicated to preserving and safeguarding Belize’s recorded musical heritage.

The launch included the inauguration of the Belize Music Archive Lab, a specialised facility housed at BARS for the digitisation, preservation, restoration and documentation of Belizean sound recordings.

NICH noted that Belizeans with recordings and historical audio materials in private and family collections will be encouraged to bring them forward for digitisation and preservation.

During the ceremony, Francis Fonseca, Minister of Culture, officially established the designation National Recording Treasures of Belize, recognizing recordings of exceptional cultural, historical, artistic or social significance to the nation.

The first 100 recordings will receive this designation in 2026, representing generations of Belizean artists across communities, languages, genres and traditions.

NICH added that commencing in 2027, a minimum of ten additional recordings will be selected each year by The Belize Music Project.

“The Belize Music Archive represents a long-term national commitment to ensure that Belize’s recorded music — and the stories, voices and traditions it carries — is preserved for generations to come,” NICH noted.
