One big green heart for the families who rallied to fill bags of donated clothes! The school passed these on to an organisation that creates jobs, supports families with disabilities, and puts the planet first.
Western Cape, South Africa (02 June 2026) – The school community at Somerset College has rallied to support families in need, reduce waste, and change lives!
In a massive show of community spirit, the Cape Winelands school filled hundreds of bags with pre-loved clothing. Instead of ending up in a landfill, these items will find new life through Clothes to Good, a local textile recycling and disability empowerment organisation.
This week, the school shared a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to its community for their efforts. Each donated bag formed part of a large green heart that took shape on the sports field before everything was packed up and sent off to make a difference.
“A heartfelt thank you to our incredible school community for your generosity and support of our clothing collection drive in aid of Clothes to Good. Because of you, bags were filled, a beautiful heart took shape on our field, and most importantly – lives will be changed.” the school shared. “Together, we truly brought out the good in what we no longer need.”
Clothes to Good aims to breathe new life into unwanted clothing, shoes, and textiles to fight poverty and protect the environment.
They collect these donations from schools like Somerset College, businesses, and retail stores, and bring them to a central hub where the items are sorted.
Anything in good condition is prepared for reuse, while worn-out fabrics are recycled or upcycled into new products like toys and rags, keeping waste completely out of landfills.
What makes their model truly special is how they use these clothes to empower vulnerable communities—particularly mothers of children with disabilities who cannot work traditional jobs. Clothes to Good provides them with financial training, mentorship, and affordable bundles of clothes so they can launch their own micro-businesses selling pre-loved clothing within their neighbourhoods. This allows them to earn a reliable income to pay for food, rent, and school fees while still being able to care for their families.
The organisation also creates a supportive environment that provides direct skills development and employment opportunities for people with disabilities. By involving them in the sorting, processing, and recycling phases, Clothes to Good helps individuals build independence and become valued, contributing members of the workforce.
Every donation of clothing serves as the essential fuel that drives this incredible job creation, female empowerment, and environmental sustainability!
