The security situation in central Mali has escalated sharply following a new wave of deadly attacks in the Mopti region, reflecting a deteriorating security environment facing transitional authorities as insurgent violence intensifies after last month’s unprecedented assault on the capital.
According to statements from the Malian Armed Forces and regional security observers, attacks carried out between May 6 and May 7 near Bankass left between 30 and 50 people dead, including local militia members and civilians.
Survivors and local sources described the assaults as coordinated operations involving dozens of armed men on motorcycles, who opened fire indiscriminately before looting food supplies and livestock, tactics commonly associated with insurgent groups in the Sahel.
Military officials said the attackers retreated quickly into surrounding semi-arid terrain, complicating pursuit operations.
A military commander confirmed that army units launched sweep and stabilization operations in parts of Mopti, while noting that militant groups retain significant mobility in remote areas with limited state presence.
The developments come less than two weeks after one of the most serious security incidents in recent history, when coordinated attacks on April 25 targeted high-profile sites in the capital, including the residence of the transitional leader and the home of the defense minister.
The defense minister was killed in a vehicle-borne explosive attack, according to military sources, while the targeting of the leader’s residence marked a rare breach of the capital’s secured administrative zone, despite authorities stating that the vehicle was intercepted.
The incidents led to tightened security measures across the capital, including increased checkpoints and patrols.
Analysts say the attacks reflect the complexity of Mali’s security landscape, where state forces face threats from extremist groups, separatist movements, and local militias.
Regional assessments indicate that a militant group linked to an international network is likely responsible for the Mopti attacks, as it intensifies operations in central Mali and shows signs of coordination with northern separatist factions.
At the same time, northern separatist alliances have resumed hostilities after the collapse of a previous peace agreement.
The military maintains it has inflicted heavy losses on militant groups, though independent verification remains difficult due to limited access.
In a televised address, the transitional leader said authorities remain in control, describing the violence as a reaction to military pressure and urging public calm.
Despite these assurances, officials acknowledged that militant activity is disrupting transport and trade routes, raising concerns over supply chains and displacement.
Analysts warn that continued insecurity in Mopti could further strain the transitional government.
Central Mali remains one of the deadliest conflict zones in the Sahel.
