Officials in Ituri and North Kivu confirmed that at least 36 people were killed over the past 48 hours in attacks targeting communities along the provincial border.
According to regional authorities and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the assaults took place between May 5 and May 7 in areas including Mambasa, Beni, and surrounding villages.
In Biakato, at least 15 civilians were killed in a direct attack, while additional raids in border villages such as Katerrain and Mangambo left 21 more dead.
Local officials confirmed that 19 bodies were recovered and transported to a hospital mortuary, while others were buried locally due to security risks.
Search operations for missing persons are ongoing, with fears that the death toll may rise.
A recent report by Amnesty International warned that the attacks may constitute war crimes and described a scorched-earth strategy targeting civilians.
