Eight Children Dead in Louisiana Mass Shooting | VIDEO

*A gunman in Louisiana killed eight children during a domestic violence shooting rampage at two different homes early Sunday, police in Shreveport said. The attack marks the nation’s deadliest mass shooting in more than two years.

“This is an extensive scene, unlike anything most of us have ever seen,” said Chris Bordelon, spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department, according to an AP report.

The victims ranged in age from one to about 14 years old, Bordelon confirmed. Some of the children were related to the suspect. In total, ten people were shot. The Shreveport mass shooting children victims represent an unprecedented loss of young life in the northwestern Louisiana community of roughly 180,000 residents.

Police responded to reports of shots fired in the Cedar Grove community just after 6 a.m. CT. They found victims across two homes along West 79th Street and a third home on nearby Harrison Street.

Suspect Dies After Police Chase

The gunman later died after a chase with officers who fired at the suspect, Bordelon said. The suspect stole a car while leaving the scene of the shootings and was pursued by police.

“The vehicle was chased into Bossier Parish, and at which point in time, Shreveport police officers did discharge their firearm, and that individual is deceased,” Bordelon said.

The Louisiana State Police are now investigating the officer-involved shooting. No officers were injured, state police confirmed. Investigators believe the suspect was an adult male related to at least some of the victims. Police have not yet released his name or the names of the children who died.

“This is a very large scene with multiple deceased children present,” Bordelon said during a news conference outside one of the residences where the shootings occurred. Officials appeared visibly stunned, requesting patience and prayers from the community as they processed multiple crime scenes south of downtown Shreveport.

‘The Worst Tragic Situation We’ve Ever Had’

Local leaders struggled to find words adequate for the scale of the tragedy.

“This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport,” Mayor Tom Arceneaux said. “It’s a terrible morning.”

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith appeared equally shaken.

“I just don’t know what to say, you know? My heart is just taken aback,” Smith said. “I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur.”

This marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since eight people were killed in a Chicago suburb in January 2024, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

Investigation Continues

Louisiana State Police detectives have been asked by Shreveport police to investigate both the shootings and the officer-involved pursuit. In a statement, state police confirmed no officers were harmed during the chase into Bossier City.

State police are asking anyone with pictures, video, or information to share it with their detectives immediately.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said in a statement that he and his wife were heartbroken by the news.

“We’re deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers and first responders working tirelessly on the scene,” Landry added.

As the Cedar Grove community begins to grieve, Chief Smith offered one of the few sentiments that seemed to capture the moment.

“I just don’t know what to say,” he repeated. For a city now mourning eight children lost to domestic violence, no words may ever be enough.
