Gamcel customers to get 89 prefix in next phase of number migration
When GAMCEL’s phase of the migration begins, customers’ existing numbers will simply gain the 89 prefix. The company said customers will retain their existing SIM cards, credit, contacts and customer relationships. Both the existing and new number formats will operate for a transition period to ensure that customers do not lose access to calls. GAMCEL said it will communicate directly with customers ahead of the change and provide information on when action may be required. In the meantime, the company has advised customers that contacts on other networks have already undergone changes as part of the first stage of the national migration. Customers calling Africell numbers should use the 87 prefix, while QCell numbers now use 83 and Comium numbers use 86. GAMCEL said customers experiencing failed calls to contacts on those networks may be affected by the numbering changes. It has therefore invited customers to bring their phones to any GAMCEL shop, where staff will assist in updating their contacts free of charge. No purchase is required for the service. The company also said its wider transformation is being undertaken through Gambian investment, with the Government of The Gambia retaining a 20 per cent stake. According to GAMCEL, the process goes beyond a change of name or ownership and involves rebuilding the national mobile operator around stronger systems, improved service delivery and a more competitive future. The company said work on the transformation has already started and pledged to communicate progress based on completed work rather than future promises.
