Known for textile-based portraits that center Black women with tenderness and authority, Swaby has works in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Canada. For Steady Sunward, she draws inspiration from the Bahamian national anthem, creating silhouetted figures that reflect the women who formed her circle of sisterhood while growing up in The Bahamas.
The location is especially meaningful. The murals stand along Little Bahamas of Coconut Grove, the historic Bahamian settlement whose residents helped build early Miami. By placing the work within an everyday public corridor, Swaby connects Nassau and Miami through shared history.
The free unveiling celebration will feature Bahamian food, music and the unmistakable pulse of a live Junkanoo band—allowing visitors to experience the culture surrounding the art, not simply observe it.
