Georgia candidates running for governor and lieutenant governor gathered in College Park on Wednesday evening to discuss the state’s future and directly engage with the community ahead of the May 19 primary election. The event featured gubernatorial candidate Ken Yasger and lieutenant governor candidates Takosha Swan, Richard N. Wright, and Brenda Nelson Porter, who are hoping to succeed incumbent Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, who is now running for governor.
The event featured a fire-round of Georgia trivia, followed by questions on their platform, policies, and what they plan to do for Georgians.
Yasger is running on a platform that prioritizes eliminating the Georgia income tax, implementing regulatory legalization of marijuana, legalizing gambling, reforming education and administrative pay, and temporarily suspending the gas tax.
“I’m running a campaign on $7,000 because I’ve turned down fundraisers because there may be strings attached later. As governor, I won’t have anyone in my ear except for real people. How am I going to eliminate the state income tax or make up for that money? That’s for the legislature to figure out, and I’ll call special sessions year-round, and they won’t be going home until it gets done, because the people’s business is what matters to me,” Yasger said. “I don’t take vacations now, and I won’t take vacations as governor.”
A combat officer and former state public officer, Swan’s platform focuses on fighting for secure and transparent elections, public safety, fiscal responsibility, support for Georgia’s veterans and their families, and parental rights.
“Cutting taxes is possible. We have the money in the surplus, and because we’re the number one state for business, we can balance those tax credits that we give to businesses to be able to do that. Also, I will be focusing on cutting and eliminating property taxes for seniors. A big part of my campaign is legacy, and legacy is land, your real estate, your home. Seniors are losing their homes due to property taxes, and that should not be,” Swan said.
Wright is a certified public accountant and business owner who is running on a platform of small business growth, economic empowerment, and fiscal responsibility that puts working families first.
“We’re currently 48th in healthcare. We have internal issues in the state with about $14 million surplus, and so I want to get to the top half in four years, so we’ll be 25th and higher in healthcare outcomes for African American women and also rural areas. I think here in metropolitan Atlanta, we need two level one hospitals. I want to have a hospital for every one million people.”
Nelson Porter Macon is a Marine Corps veteran, a researcher, and a technologist who is running on a platform focused on veteran advocacy, healthcare access, workforce development, and government accountability.
Early voting is currently underway until May 15, and election day for the primaries is May 19.
