*The case surrounding the 2002 murder of Jam Master Jay took another turn as prosecutors moved to keep Karl Jordan Jr. behind bars, successfully blocking his planned release on bond..

According to All Hip Hop, a federal judge had signed off on a $1 million bond for Jordan, but that decision was immediately challenged by prosecutors who filed an appeal, effectively suspending his release. The case has since been referred to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, where judges will now decide whether Jordan should remain in custody while his legal proceedings continue. The appellate court’s ruling will determine whether the lower court’s bond decision should stand or be reversed.

Jordan, Jay’s godson, and Ronald Washington, a childhood friend of the slain DJ, were found guilty in 2024 of murder connected to narcotics trafficking and a firearm-related offense. Born Jason Mizell, Jam Master Jay was gunned down at his Jamaica, Queens recording studio on October 30, 2002. The shocking crime remained one of music’s most prominent unsolved cases for nearly two decades until federal authorities arrested both men in 2020.

Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall had previously granted Jordan temporary relief, citing unresolved questions surrounding the government’s explanation of motive, despite witness testimony presented during the trial. Prosecutors maintaine that the killing was rooted in a drug deal gone wrong in Baltimore, with Jordan and Washington allegedly seeking revenge over the failed transaction.

In December 2025, the court vacated Jordan’s conviction while leaving Washington’s conviction in place. Washington remains in federal custody awaiting sentencing, as his case continues separately from Jordan’s ongoing legal fight. Jordan also faces additional federal drug charges unrelated to the murder case.
