Jay Jody Reflects On Finding His Global Fans Following His Visit To Canada. South African artist Jay Jody has returned from Montreal with more than memories of an international trip. For the Pretoria-born rapper, songwriter, producer and filmmaker, his experience at the Beyond Borders International Conference became a deeply personal journey of discovery, connection and creative awakening.
Reflecting on the experience in a heartfelt social media post, Jody, whose real name is Phologo Judah Mataboge, shared a Setswana proverb that speaks to the value of travel as a way of seeing, learning and understanding both people and the world.
For Jody, that lesson came to life in Montreal.
What began as an opportunity to perform and participate in an international creative space quickly developed into something much deeper. The artist described the conference as an experience that “became spiritual”, adding that “something got unlocked” during his time there.
Surrounded by creatives and forward-thinking minds from different parts of the world, Jody found himself forming connections that extended well beyond the conference itself. Rather than simply meeting people, he discovered what he described as his “Tr!be” in places he never expected.

Jody expressed his appreciation for Parker and her mother, Ilunga Ange Bukasa, affectionately referring to Parker as his “lil sis” while thanking her mother for the warmth she showed him during his stay.

Jody, known as one half of B3nchMarQ and as the older brother of fellow South African rapper A-Reece, has carved out his own lane through introspective music, cinematic creativity and his work through Revenge Club Records. His growing catalogue of international collaborations, including his work with Parker, has continued to place his artistry in conversations that reach beyond South Africa.
