Jay-Z has officially announced JAŸ-Z IN 8, an eight-part documentary series coming to HBO this fall, directed by legendary producer Rick Rubin and executive produced by Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya. The series falls under the HBO Documentary Films and Tetragrammaton banners, with Jay-Z joining Rubin and Kaluuya as executive producers.
The announcement dropped alongside a 41-second teaser trailer on June 25. It’s a brief window into what promises to be one of the most revealing looks at one of rap’s greatest careers, and the man behind it.
Rubin previously went a similar route with the Paul McCartney–focused McCartney 3,2,1 on Hulu back in 2021, a series that stripped away the mythology and got into the actual craft and thought process behind the music. That same energy appears to be at the core of JAŸ-Z IN 8. According to the official synopsis, “Rick Rubin sits down with Jay-Z to discuss his music, lyrics, life experiences, and creative process.”

What surfaces in the teaser points toward something more introspective than a typical career retrospective. “Everyone had this same experience, except I was the one that could stand on the soapbox and articulate what we were going through,” Jay-Z says in the clip.
Rubin, for his part, points to an undefined pain as an impetus for putting in the work, prompting Jay-Z to give his own take: “You don’t say it’s necessary, you don’t say you need it. But if it’s there, you use it.”
Jay-Z is deep in a year of milestone anniversaries, Reasonable Doubt turns 30 and The Blueprint turns 25 in 2026, making this an ideal moment to pull back the curtain on the full arc of his career and legacy. He also recently delivered a widely discussed freestyle at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, reminding everyone that HOV is as sharp as ever on the mic.
JAŸ-Z IN 8 is set to debut on HBO this fall and will also be available to stream on Max.
