A walk through a Johannesburg park may not sound life-changing, but for many men, it could become the first step towards connection and healing. That’s exactly what Joe Fleming hopes to create with “The Big Walk” this June.
Johannesburg, South Africa (28 May 2026) – You can tell a lot about a person by the spaces they create for others. And Joe Fleming has created a space where men can arrive exactly as they are… tired, anxious, overwhelmed, hopeful, lost, healing or simply needing to get out of the house for a couple of hours.
There is no judgment or pressure, just people walking side by side and reminding each other that life can be a little lighter when you stop carrying it “all” alone.
That’s the heart behind “The Big Walk”, taking place on Saturday, 20th of June 2026, at the Delta Park Blue Bridge in Johannesburg. A gathering created for men to connect, move, breathe and remember that they don’t have to navigate life on their own.
“Next month is men’s mental health month, and I’m organising a long walk for men on Saturday, June 20th, at the Delta Park Blue Bridge,” Joe shared with us.
“Our weekly walks with Recharge are typically on Friday mornings at 7am, but not everyone can make it. So we’re putting together a big walk.”
For many Good Things Guy readers (and many, many South Africans who already follow him), Joe’s name may already feel familiar after his conversation on our poddie earlier this year. It was a very honest conversation about what he has been through, how he almost didn’t make it, but found himself and his purpose along the way.
Joe has since founded Recharge, a men’s mental health walking community that helps create spaces for connection and healing across South Africa. He’s also the storyteller behind “Here in South Africa” and the owner of “Bonafide Moto Co”, hosting off-road motorcycle adventures around the country since 2016. Originally from the United States, Joe served in Iraq before eventually moving to South Africa more than a decade ago, a journey that would completely reshape his understanding of life and purpose.
Over the past 13 years, he has travelled through South Africa documenting landscapes, stories and people, but somewhere in the middle of all that movement, he found himself facing a battle within himself too. During the poddie, Joe spoke openly about reaching a point where life felt impossibly heavy. A moment where he tried to take his own life before something shifted.
“I don’t know what it was,” he explained. “People call it different things… faith, instinct, something bigger than us… but something stopped me. Something gave me a second chance.”
That second chance slowly became Recharge. And now Joe will be hosting his biggest Recharge Walk yet!
We asked Joe what he hopes to achieve through The Big Walk.
“Honestly, I just want to create a space where men can show up as they are. No pressure. No expectations. Just movement, conversation and connection.”
“A lot of men are carrying things silently and don’t always know where to go or who to talk to. Sometimes the first step is simply getting outside, walking beside other men, and realising you’re not alone.”
“If we can get men connecting, talking, and building healthier friendships and support systems, then I think we’ve achieved something really meaningful.”
And for anyone sitting on the fence, unsure whether they belong there, Joe wants them to know they already do.
“You don’t need to have it all figured out to come.”
“You don’t need to be super fit, outgoing, or even know anyone. A lot of the guys who come for the first time feel nervous beforehand, but within a few minutes that disappears.”
“There’s no pressure to talk if you don’t want to. Sometimes just being around good people and getting out for a walk is enough.”
“The whole idea behind Recharge is simple, just men showing up for men.”
And that’s why we love this initiative and Joe. He’s creating a space where a simple morning walk through a Johannesburg park can become the beginning of healing, friendship and finding your footing again.
