Keefe D Trial: Detective Reveals DA Blocked 2009 Arrest In Tupac Murder

Detective Dan Long took the stand in the Keefe D murder trial and revealed a stunning detail: the Las Vegas District Attorney told him to “stand down” on arresting Keefe D for Tupac’s murder in 2009, despite Long having probable cause to make the arrest.

Long, who worked the Tupac homicide case from 2004 to 2017, conducted a recorded interview with Keefe D in Los Angeles on September 9, 2009.

Keefe D, facing serious drug charges, was attempting to work off his sentence by providing information about various crimes, including Tupac’s 1996 murder.

During the interview, Keefe D provided details about the shooting, including information about Orlando Anderson being beaten at the MGM and claims about a rented Cadillac used in the crime.

Long said his immediate plan was clear: “My intent was to drive back to Las Vegas, type up a warrant for an arrest, clear it with the district attorney, and have Mr. Davis arrested for murder.”

But that’s not what happened.

When Long returned to Las Vegas with the recording and transcription, he met with the District Attorney’s office. Instead of moving forward with charges, prosecutors told him to stand down.

“They told me to stand down and they were going to review it,” Long testified. “I got the information to them as quickly as I could. Had to be typed up by one of our secretaries, but I did make sure they got the audio as quick as they could.There was plenty of probable cause to arrest for murder.”

The complication? A proffer agreement.

Keefe D had apparently made a deal to provide information in exchange for reduced charges. Long explained that he and his team tried to find out the details of this agreement but hit dead ends.

Long also testified about the challenges in corroborating Keefe D’s statements.

He attempted to verify claims that Orlando Anderson had visited a hospital on Maryland Parkway in 1996 but found no records. He searched for a rented Cadillac supposedly used in the crime but came up empty.

Long’s testimony raises questions about why the case wasn’t prosecuted in 2009 when he had probable cause and a recorded statement from a suspect.

The detective spent 13 years on the case, from 2004 until his retirement in 2017, but the arrest didn’t come until 2023, 14 years after that fateful interview.
