Durban Curry House recently featured the famous Prego roll in its South African sandwich series while exploring the Southern African roots of peri-peri.
London, United Kingdom (28 May 2026) – A taste of Southern Africa is making waves in the United Kingdom thanks to Durban Curry House and its latest food series celebrating iconic South African flavours.
In episode two of its South African sandwiches series, the London-based eatery turned the spotlight onto a favourite many South Africans know well, and that’s the legendary Prego Roll.
But this was not just about steak on bread. The video also unpacked the rich Southern African roots behind peri-peri, explaining how Portuguese and Mozambican influences helped create the fiery flavour now loved around the world.
It’s mixed with many ingredients including like garlic, paprika and vinegar to create the now-famous sauce.
The video then takes viewers through its own take on the classic prego roll, from tenderising steaks and marinating them overnight in a spicy peri-peri mixture, to preparing a smoky sauce over a braai.
With sizzling steak, generous amounts of peri-peri sauce and crispy shallots layered onto soft rolls, the final result looked like something straight out of a South African pub menu.
