After five years of mourning his lost dog, he got the call, and they were reunited. We’re crying all the happy tears.
Durban, South Africa (25 May 2026) – The grief of a lost pet is an awful kind. Especially when hope begins to fade, and you’re forced to accept they might be gone forever, as weeks turn into months, and months into years.
That agonising chapter lasted a staggering five years too long for one Durban pet owner. Earlier this month, the universe decided it was time for a miracle.
The incredible story began when a stray dog was brought into the Durban & Coast SPCA from the Umlazi area. Following standard protocol, the dedicated SPCA team immediately scanned the dog for a microchip.
Ding ding! To their absolute delight, a beep confirmed that he had one. Even better, the owner’s contact details were completely up to date. The SPCA team grabbed the phone to deliver life-changing news.
“When our Adoptions Team made the call, his owner was in tears. His beloved dog had gone missing FIVE years ago, and he never imagined he would see him again.” they shared.
Five years is a lifetime in a dog’s world, leaving the staff to wonder if the pup would even remember the life he left behind. The moment the owner walked through the doors, all doubts vanished.
“This sweet boy remembered his owner instantly. Watching their reunion was something truly special.”
Tails wagging and tears flowing, it was the most wonderful reminder that love has an impeccable memory and a way of making its way back where it belongs.
“This is exactly why microchipping matters. A microchip is painless, affordable, and gives your pet the best possible chance of finding their way back home if they are ever lost.”
Always ensure that your pets are microchipped and registered, with all details (including your address and contact number) up to date. Losing a four-legged family member is never a part of the plan, but microchipping makes the biggest difference if it does ever happen.
“Can you imagine losing your pet… and then getting the chance to hold them again 5 years later? What a miracle.”
