Last week I bumped into someone who had called me names and used unpalatable words towards me on Facebook. We both were due to travel from Blantyre to Lilongwe and she looked uncomfortable with my presence and attempted to chat with me as we waited to board. She complimented me on my outfit as an ice breaker. It was obvious she remembered what she said about me. It was also clear that meeting me face to face was unexpect and she did not have the same energy looking at Edith Gondwe in person.
You see, this is the thing with social media. It gives people fake confidence, making them believe they are invisible to do and say anything to anyone without a care in the world.
But when you face a person you insulted, that is when it hits you that social media is far from reality and you realise that keeping sometimes it is prudent to keep some thoughts to yourself.
I do not like double-faced people. If someone feels they can attack, insult and belittle me on social media, then they should not pretend to be friendly with me when we meet. They should maintain the same energy and keep it moving.
Attacking people you do not know is more than careless. It is dangerous and can have lasting impact on one’s life and progress. I know social media gives people an illusion they are safe and whatever they say will not come back to bite them.
Well, in the era of social media, we should know that what we put out there is our blueprint. The Internet will never forget. It will forever remember it and if the content injures other people, there will surely be consequences one day.
In other cases, the results of what we do on social media might not be immediate, but they will surely come in one way or the other.
I have seen people losing job opportunities because of how they handled themselves on the social media streets. These have accorded people opportunities to grow their careers, business and even finding soul mates. This is all about being self-aware and being social media literate.
I will take you back to my situation. I chose to keep in real, but maintaining the same energy this person gave on social media. I didn’t accommodate them. Imagine if I were an employer and I get to handle an application of someone whose conduct on social media leaves a lot to be desired?
All I am saying is while we are all free to write and post whatever we want on social media, having boundaries and being careful on social media platforms goes a long way. When used wisely, social media can be a fountain of opportunities
