Malawi Hosts FIFA Youth Goalkeeper Coaching Workshop

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has commenced a five-day FIFA Elite Youth Goalkeeper Coaches Workshop at Mpira Village in Chiwembe.

The workshop has attracted 25 goalkeeper coaches from national teams, women’s teams, academies and selected Super League youth sides. It is part of FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme, aimed at raising standards in youth coaching.

FIFA Goalkeeping Experts Ali Saleh (Qatar) and David Taini (Switzerland) are facilitating the sessions, combining classroom theory with intensive on-pitch drills focusing on modern goalkeeping techniques, talent identification and age-specific training.

Saleh described the workshop as an important platform for knowledge exchange.

“This is a great opportunity for us and for Malawian goalkeepers to understand what is happening globally. Football is evolving every day, and clubs are now looking for modern goalkeepers,” he said.

He added that the initiative will help improve standards through shared learning.

“We are here to share knowledge with our colleagues and understand the local context so that we can collectively improve goalkeeping in Malawi,” he said.

Under-17 Men’s National Team Goalkeeper Coach Hethwin Nkumbaleza commended FAM for the initiative.

“This is a valuable opportunity to learn new approaches as the game continues to evolve. It will help us better train young goalkeepers and improve the goalkeeping department,” he said.

Participants will be assessed and certified by FIFA at the end of the workshop and are expected to implement youth goalkeeper development programmes within their respective clubs and academies.

The workshop is part of several FIFA-supported technical programmes being rolled out by FAM as it continues to strengthen football development in Malawi.
