Multi-billion rand port upgrades aimed to strengthen border security
Five construction consortiums have been announced to redevelop ports of entry.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber says the redevelopment of six strategic ports of entry across the country will significantly improve border security.
Earlier, the Border Management Authority (BMA) announced the appointment of five construction consortiums to redevelop the selected ports of entry at a cost of R12.5 billion.
The ports of entry set for upgrades are Lebombo, Beitbridge, Oshoek, Bopfontein, Maseru Bridge and Ficksburg.
Schreiber says the project forms part of government’s plan to improve the movement of people and goods, and support economic growth through modern, technology-driven infrastructure.
“These reforms will significantly strengthen border security, enhance surveillance, improve infrastructure, and integrated data systems will allow for more targeted and effective enforcement. This will improve our ability to combat illicit trade, prevent the use of fraudulent documentation, and address non-compliance. Importantly this new infrastructure combined with the stronger systems we are rolling out like the ETA combine overtime to create a deterrent effect. As enforcement becomes more effective and more visible, as infrastructure visibly improves illegal activity is not on intercepted, it is also deterred.”
