National Principals Month Meets Chaplain Appreciation Month: Dr. Monica S. Hall Leads Through Service

October recognizes both National Principals Month and National Chaplain Appreciation Month—a fitting moment to spotlight Dr. Monica S. Hall, who serves as both a head of school and a U.S. Army Chaplain. As Founder and Head of School of T.H.R.I.V.E. Christian Academy, and Founder of T.H.R.I.V.E. Live!, she brings education, ministry, and military service together in a leadership practice rooted in presence and care.

Dr. Hall is an educator, author, speaker, ordained minister, and nationally recognized education thought leader. A graduate of Howard University, Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, and the University of Miami, she has served in the U.S. Army Reserve for two decades.

Did you always plan to become a chaplain?

Dr. Hall: No. I planned to become a military attorney and imagined serving as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. During my junior year at Howard University, I felt called to Army Chaplaincy. God’s plan was different from the one I had mapped out.

How has military service shaped your leadership as a principal/ head of school?

Dr. Hall: It has strengthened my understanding of discipline, responsibility, and service. It has also taught me that leadership is not just about position. It’s about being present, making difficult decisions, and caring for people through challenging moments.

What does faith look like in the daily life of T.H.R.I.V.E.?

Dr. Hall: Faith is part of how we approach learning, relationships, and service, not only what students study. We make space for prayer, devotion, and worship, and we encourage students to show their values through integrity, perseverance, and how they treat others.

October invites people to recognize school leaders and chaplains. What would you want them to understand about that work?

Dr. Hall: Both roles require a deep commitment to people. You’re often supporting others while carrying significant responsibility yourself. The work is meaningful because it gives you the opportunity to serve, guide, and help a community grow.
