Opinion: Does Lambeth hate its council tenants?

Hate might be a strong word, but Labour’s behaviour running Lambeth council housing is beyond awful.

Lambeth is one of the most complained about councils for repairs in the whole country.

Tenants are often so desperate, they take the council to court to get basic repairs done.

This has become so common that Lambeth spends £21 million a year on legal fees — roughly £900 per tenant. Labour’s response? Ask tenants to stop suing.

Almost every week I see serious problems on Lambeth council estates – whether it’s people with recurrent mould and damp, showers that don’t work or having to live with broken windows all through the winter.

This month things hit a new low.

A resident in Stockwell contacted me about a stream of water pouring out of the floor above and into her garden. It’s been pouring out, day and night, for three weeks — enough water to supply a family for three months. She filmed it in this video:

The noise is keeping residents awake at night, and the water may be damaging the building. If it does, that’s another bill that tenants will have to pick up.

Three weeks after it was reported, Lambeth say it could take another month to fix. That’s more sleepless nights for residents, huge amounts of water wasted and more damage done.

This is truly pathetic. Lambeth council tenants deserve better.
