A man (29) from Oshakati West was arrested at Oshakati on Friday after he allegedly attempted to smuggle cannabis into police holding cells at Oshakati Police Station.

Oshana regional police commander commissioner Naftal Sakaria confirmed the incident on Monday.

He said the suspect has been charged with contravening the Abuse of Dependence-Producing Substances and Rehabilitation Centres Act, relating to the possession of prohibited dependence-producing drugs.

Sakaria said the incident took place at around 13h15 when the suspect brought an accused person in custody food.

“Upon searching the items, the police discovered cannabis hidden underneath a lunch box,” he said.

The police confiscated 55g of cannabis, with an estimated street value of N$2 750.

Sakaria on Monday said the suspect is expected to appear in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

“These incidents are common. This is what we’re dealing with at our cells every day. Members of the public are always trying to smuggle drugs into cells through the concealment method. You have to be vigilant to see that,” he said.
