Pride at stake as Uganda, Burundi battle for bronze | 2026 CECAFA U-20

2026 CECAFA U-20 championship (AFCON U-20 Qualifiers):

The 2026 CECAFA U-20 championship will climax at the Uhuru stadium in Dar-es-salaam city, Tanzania on Thursday, 24th September.

There are two matches lined up on the day. Hosts Tanzania take on Sudan in the gold medal match whilst Uganda will square up against Burundi in the bronze medal duel.

The Uganda versus Burundi game kicks off early, at 12:30 PM and will be followed by the grand finale, later at 3:30 PM.

Uganda lost 2-3 to Sudan in the explosive semi-final contest on Tuesday.

Sudan recovered from an early Richard Okello goal to win the contest 3-2 courtesy of goals from Rudman Yahya Mohamed Ishag, captain Waheed Shandi Somi Elbadri and Mazin Fadul Albahli Taowr.

Derrick Ssozi scored Uganda’s other goal as Laryea Kingston’s led charges fell at a critical stage.

It will be pride at stake for Uganda or Burundi who yearn to return home with at least some silverware.

Uganda will bank on the expertise of midfielder Isima Mulala Magala, winger and captain Richard Okello as well as kingpin defenders Gilbert Ongenrwot and Barasa Mangoli for inspiration.

Burundi’s razor sharp forward Amini Nshimirimana (captain), the current top scorer with four goals will definitely look forward to add to his tally.

Ally Magambo, Roy Amissi, Abedi Irakoze and Ali-Ali Sadiki are other important players for Jean De Dieu Rukundo’s coached side.

The second semi-final witnessed Tanzania edging Burundi 2-0.

Juma Abushiri scored directly from a corner kick and Faraji Kayanda got the other goal for the hosts.

Both Tanzania and Sudan come to Thursday’s final having already booked their berths to the AFCON U-20 finals in Ghana come next year.
