Prime Minister tours Westlake Facility as temporary generation capacity nears operation

By Zoila Palma:  Today, Prime Minister John Briceño toured the Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) Westlake Facility, where temporary generation capacity is being installed to strengthen Belize’s electricity supply and reduce the risk of further disruptions to the national grid.

BEL said the temporary generation capacity is currently being installed at the Westlake Facility and is expected to begin operations by mid-September 2026.

The additional capacity is being procured for an initial six-month period as the company works to improve reliability and resilience across the national electricity system.

During his visit, Prime Minister Briceño said the tour provided an opportunity to get a firsthand understanding of the facility’s operations and current generation capacity. “Today, I visited the Westlake facility for a firsthand look at its operations and generation capacity. Understanding what is working on the ground is important as we continue strengthening Belize’s energy supply and planning for greater reliability and resilience,” he said.

The temporary generation is expected to provide additional support to the national grid during a period when Belize continues to focus on strengthening electricity infrastructure and ensuring a more stable and reliable supply for consumers.
