Rapper ColdheartedAC Busted In $8.1 Million Stolen Check Scheme

ColdheartedAC got arrested Wednesday after federal agents caught him sitting on a mountain of stolen checks worth over eight million dollars.

The 31-year-old Quartz Hill rapper, whose real name is Ada William Obayuwana, was charged with nine counts of bank fraud alongside two co-defendants in what prosecutors are calling a sophisticated check-cashing operation that spanned across Southern California.

He’s facing serious federal time if convicted, and right now he’s locked up waiting for his next court date.

The scheme ran from April 2022 through December 2023, and it was built on forging endorsements on stolen Treasury checks that contained tax refunds, veterans’ benefits, and Social Security payments.

ColdheartedAC and his crew would alter names and addresses on the checks, then open bank accounts to deposit the stolen money into branches across Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties.

According to the Antelope Valley Press, when authorities pulled him over in Oceanside in December 2023, they found more than 100 fraudulent checks in his car worth over $6 million alone.

Before his arrest, ColdheartedAC was building a music career with over 400,000 Instagram followers where he’d constantly flex his lifestyle with photos of diamond chains, luxury watches, and expensive cars.

He even posted pictures of himself hanging with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather at what looked like industry events. The rapper had visited SiriusXM Studios in New York City back in 2022, suggesting he was getting real opportunities in the music space.

His co-defendants Albert Tai Vu and Cassandra Marie Murrillo face similar charges, with Vu accused of successfully cashing two tax refund checks worth over $772,000 and buying a Range Rover with the proceeds.

ColdheartedAC managed to cash eight checks totaling around $1.7 million before getting caught.

Similar to other rappers caught in fraud schemes, the lifestyle he was flaunting on social media became the evidence that helped authorities build their case against him.

If convicted on all counts, ColdheartedAC faces up to 30 years in federal prison for each bank fraud count, plus additional time for identity theft and delivering stolen Treasury checks. His detention hearing happened Friday, and he remains in federal custody awaiting trial.
