Red, white & blue, books, bikes & big parades—September is here!

By Zoila Palma:  September is more than a month of national celebrations in Belize—it is a time when students across the country come alive with learning, creativity, culture, patriotism and community spirit.

From the classroom to the streets, schools traditionally organize activities that give students an opportunity to participate in and experience the meaning of Belize’s Independence Celebrations.

International Literacy Day is being observed tomorrow September 8, with schools hosting fun and educational activities such as reading competitions, storytelling, poetry recitals, spelling bees, book character presentations, debates, essay writing, quizzes, reading circles and visits from local authors, journalists and community leaders.

On September 18, 2026, schools gather for the school and district rallies with parades and patriotic rallies.

Students can dress in red, white and blue, decorate bicycles, create patriotic hats, carry flags, blow horns and make colorful signs celebrating Belize.

Then on September 19, the nation observes National Service Day in honor of the Father of the Nation George Cadle Price who proudly and selflessly served Belize.

September celebrations brings excitement toward September 21, Independence Day, when Belizeans gather for the country’s biggest parades.

Students can proudly march alongside Scouts, Cadets, schools and community groups, while businesses and organizations add to the celebration with colorful floats.

As Belize celebrates its 45^th Independence Day, students proudly display their civic pride and citizenship engaging in activities and lessons that teach us about the journey to our country’s Independence.
