Riky Rick To Be Honoured With Memorial Forest In Free State. A powerful new chapter of remembrance, restoration, and community healing is set to unfold in South Africa’s Eastern Free State as the Riky Rick Foundation for the Promotion of Artivism joins forces with the Naledi Village Communal Property Association and Rustlers Valley Regenerative Farm and Eco-Tourism to launch the Riky Rick/Anton Chaka Memorial Forest.

Taking place on 18 and 19 July 2026, the two-day gathering has been thoughtfully timed to coincide with Nelson Mandela Day and comes just days before what would have been Riky Rick’s birthday on 20 July. Rather than honouring remarkable lives with statues or monuments, the initiative will create something far more enduring. A thriving forest of indigenous trees will stand as a living tribute to Frik Grobbelaar, Anton Chaka, and the late musician, cultural icon, and artivist Riky Rick.

According to the Riky Rick Foundation, the memorial forest is intended to become a place of remembrance, healing, regeneration, and hope where people can reconnect with nature while celebrating lives that continue to inspire generations.

“This special gathering marks Nelson Mandela Day and Riky Rick’s birthday. It is dedicated to honouring the legacies of Frik Grobbelaar, Anton Chaka and Riky Rick through a living space of remembrance, healing, regeneration, and hope,” the foundation said.

Participants will spend the weekend planting trees, restoring the land, and sharing stories that celebrate the impact of the three men whose legacies continue to shape communities in different ways. The programme combines environmental action with reflection, transforming memory into meaningful action while promoting the principles of regenerative agriculture and sustainable eco-tourism.

For the organisers, the memorial forest represents far more than a conservation project. It embodies the spirit of artivism, the philosophy Riky Rick championed throughout his life by using creativity as a force for social change. Every tree planted will serve as a lasting reminder of resilience, compassion, creativity, and collective responsibility for both people and the planet.

The partnership also brings together organisations deeply rooted in community development and environmental restoration. The Naledi Village Communal Property Association and Rustlers Valley contribute extensive experience in regenerative land management, ensuring the initiative delivers lasting ecological benefits while creating opportunities for surrounding communities.

Organisers are inviting members of the public to become part of this meaningful journey.

“Together, we will plant trees, share stories, restore the land and celebrate lives that continue to inspire generations.”

The initiative is captured in a simple yet powerful message that reflects its purpose.

“Together, we grow legacy into life.”

Those wishing to attend or support the Riky Rick/Anton Chaka Memorial Forest are encouraged to contact the Riky Rick Foundation for further information.

As South Africa continues to confront environmental challenges while honouring the people who have shaped its cultural landscape, the memorial forest offers a hopeful reminder that the most meaningful tributes are often those that continue growing long after they are planted.
