From a life on the streets to cooking up a storm in the kitchen, doing a career he loves – Sam’s journey just goes to show that with a little support and a lot of heart, any life can be rewritten!
Johannesburg, South Africa (13 May 2026) – Once feeling lost on a path that didn’t seem to lead to the life he dreamed of, Sam was surrounded by caring souls who looked beyond his hardships and believed in his potential, helping him find his way again.
It all began when a good friend of Sam’s reached out to the One SMALL Act of Kindness (OSAOK) charity, worried about his situation. She knew he was living on the streets and had been desperately trying to find a safe place for him.
“We guided her to the shelter and advised that he speak to the social worker,” shares Kelly-Ann Van Der Meer, the founder of OSAOK.
A few days later, the charity received news that Sam had gone missing, and his friend hadn’t heard from him at all.
“We reassured her that we would keep an eye out for him if he came to the shelter. Then, one Tuesday evening, as we were busy cooking, a man approached me. He started talking about needing help, and suddenly it all clicked,” Kelly explained.
Kelly quickly recognised him as Sam.
“I told him how worried we’d been and how worried his friend was, too. We got in touch with her right away, and the relief and happiness in her voice said everything,” Kelly added.

From that moment, everything started to turn around.
Sam began helping out by working in the OSOAK community gardens, volunteering, cooking, and cleaning in the kitchen. And thanks to donations generously contributed by supporters, the charity was able to get Sam ready for the next steps of his journey.
He used clothing items OSOAK kept aside for job interviews, got a fresh haircut, and walked out with confidence to try himself out in the job market. His confidence grew almost overnight.
Then came an opportunity.
The charity received a call about a job at Norma and Co and immediately put Sam forward.
“Our CV warriors got to work, preparing and sending out his CV. We sat together, did interview prep, and had small but important conversations about how to present himself. And he did it.”
Sam got the job!
“Since then, Sam has been doing incredibly well. We’ve received such positive feedback from his boss, and he absolutely loves working in the kitchen at his new place of work.”
OSOAK is now walking the next part of the journey with Sam, teaching him how to save, spend wisely, and budget.
“There’s still a road ahead… but he’s on it. And we couldn’t be prouder.”
Sam’s story, shared on OSAOK’s Facebook page, has easily warmed the hearts of several South Africans who have admired his perseverance in turning his life around.
His employers have also praised him, describing Sam as an eager-to-learn, polite, punctual young man who isn’t scared of hard work and long hours.
“He has fitted right into our team, and we look forward to what the future holds for him,” Norma and Co shared.
Sam’s past may have been clouded by struggle, but it wasn’t his final chapter. He found a new path because of the people who refused to give up on him. In his own words of gratitude, he thanks Kelly and those who gave him a hand-up:
“I just want to take a moment to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Kelly, if it wasn’t for you getting me this job as a chef, I honestly don’t know where I’d be right now. And Karen, thank you for making sure I had a shelter over my head when I needed it most. I really appreciate everything you both have done for me. Please keep up the good work and keep helping our nation. You’re making a real difference. Grateful for you both.”
There is no ending quite as happy as seeing a South African defy the odds and find their moment to shine. Keep thriving, Sam!
