SA’s cheapest province for vehicle licence renewals in 2026

Long-time South African motorists know that vehicle licence renewals are dictated by two main factors. Namely, what vehicle you drive. Specifically defined by its empty weight, or tare. And then which province you’re licencing the vehicle in. Of course, no one enjoys the annual disc renewal process. Thankfully, greatly improved online services, like government’s NATIS, have eliminated the queues. And filling out those old multi-coloured forms is a thing of the past …

VEHICLE LICENCE RENEWALS IN 2026

Moreover, we’ve only had good experiences in dealing with the centrally run NATIS portal. It alerts you well before any upcoming vehicle licence renewals are due. From there, you simply login, pay the fee and your new disc arrives by courier five working days later. However, one thing the online convenience doesn’t mention upfront is the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) quietly adding a R72 transaction fee to every renewal. 

Nevertheless, that’s perhaps a small price to pay in 2026 for vehicle licence renewals. As you’ll see below, each province sets its own tariffs and revises them on their own schedule. Some have not been touched in years, while others are moving the goalposts annually. Effective dates are stated clearly below. So, here are the cheapest provinces to renew your vehicle in South Africa  – using tare bands from 750 kg to 2,500 kg:

1. EASTERN CAPE (unchanged since 1 June 2018)

Therefore, the Eastern Cape stays the cheapest through all the mid-weight ranges. And it is no wonder when you see the province is running on tariffs that are now over eight years old. Meanwhile, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal charge the most across the common tare bands. Plus, worth noting is how increases to Free State vehicle licence renewals just came into effect last month.

WHAT ABOUT PENALTY FEES?

Furthermore, this next bit is important, and why you don’t want to delay 2026 vehicle licence renewals if you can avoid them. You get a 21-day grace period from your expiry date. And if you miss that window, three things get added to your bill. You still pay the full annual fee, plus pro-rata arrears for the unlicenced months. But on top of that, a penalty of 10% of the annual fee is charged for every month or part there of overdue. Frankly, the system is so efficient now, that if you do miss the renewal deadline you only have yourself to blame. No more excuses of the letter getting lost by the Post Office …
