Sharpton Issues Statement On 20-Year Sentence Given To Illinois Killer-Cop Who Murdered Sonya Massey
Photos: YouTube Screenshots New York, NY — Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), issued the following statement on an Illinois judge’s 20-year sentence for the former sheriff’s deputy [Sean Grayson] responsible for the 2024 murder of Sonya Massey. “The criminal justice system followed through today to deliver actual accountability for a member of law enforcement who abused their power. While 20 years sends a message that there will be penalties, I believe this former deputy should have received a life sentence. This person took Sonya Massey’s life in a moment where she was in crisis and deserved help. In 20 years, this individual will walk free but Sonya Massey will still be gone. She will never be with her family again, nor get to live a full life. National Action Network stood with her family and community after this brazen murder then, and we will continue to fight for them to ensure another horrific killing does not happen.” Deputies were called to Massey’s Illinois home in Summer 2024, during which the deputy [Sean Grayson] instructed her to drop a pot of water — after which she was shot. Authorities later said Massey had been complying with the deputy’s instructions, which contradicted his initial claims he was going to throw it at her. Rev. Sharpton and NAN joined a rally that summer to demand justice over her murder, pushing for stronger background checks in hiring law enforcement.
