SMART Zambia and ITU Equip Kalomo Youth Centre to Advance Digital Inclusion

SMART Zambia Institute,  in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU),  has deployed ICT equipment to the Mukwela Youth Resource Centre in Kalomo District, Southern Province, as part of efforts to expand digital inclusion and skills development.

The equipment was handed over on 10 August 2026 by SMART Zambia Assistant Director of Digital Skills and Capabilities Brian Nawa Nawa, alongside Principal Digital Skills Officer Chunga Manzi and Provincial ICT Officer Joyce Mushiko.

Nawa Nawa said the equipment would support digital literacy and skills development, with particular benefits for young women involved in business. He urged centre staff to ensure the devices are properly managed and used for their intended purpose.

According to SMART Zambia, the deployment will transform the Mukwela facility into a fully fledged Digital Transformation Centre, providing a platform for young people in the area to gain digital skills and participate more actively in the digital economy.

The centre’s Deputy Manager, Patel Hachitema, welcomed the equipment, saying it would help ensure that young people in Mukwela are not left behind in Zambia’s digital transformation.

Provincial ICT Officer Joyce Mushiko said the deployment comes at a critical time and reinforces the government’s commitment to expanding digital access and ensuring that citizens across the country can participate in the digital revolution.

SMART Zambia’s National Coordinator and the Permanent Secretary for Youth, Sports and Arts are expected to officially commission the Digital Transformation Centre at a later date.
