MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s parliament speaker, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama, plans to cut the salaries of about 50 lawmakers for not regularly attending assembly meetings, Somali Stream reported on Sunday.
Jama has ordered the parliament secretariat to provide him with the names of lawmakers who are often absent from meetings, and has ordered that they receive no stipends or salaries by September.
If carried out, it would be the first time a speaker of the Somali parliament has made such an attempt. It is the first move of its kind Jama has taken since his recent election.
The plan would affect at least 50 lawmakers, among them ministers in the government of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
It was not immediately clear whether the secretariat had supplied the names, how many missed meetings would qualify a lawmaker as regularly absent, or when any cut would take effect.
