Supreme Court Hears Arguments On Role Of Race In Redistricting

At the time, the map had only one majority-Black district out of six, despite nearly one-third of Louisiana’s population being Black. The court found that this lessened the voting power of Black residents and ordered the legislature to redraw the map to comply with federal law.  In response, Louisiana lawmakers created a new congressional map with a second majority-Black district, aiming to provide fairer representation in line with the VRA’s requirement that minority voters have an equal opportunity to elect candidates of their choice.  That second revised map is currently being challenged, directly ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. The outcome of the case could determine whether Louisiana and many other states would need to redraw their maps, which could impact minority representation and the balance of power in legislatures nationwide and for decades to come.
