*President Trump has nominated Dr. Erica Schwartz, a retired military physician and former deputy surgeon general, to serve as the next director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, NPR reports.
Trump announced the pick on Truth Social, offering an enthusiastic endorsement of his choice. “Erica graduated from Brown University for College and Medical School, and served a distinguished career as a Doctor of Medicine in the United States Military, the Greatest and Most Powerful Force in the World, and then served as my Deputy Surgeon General during my First Term. She is a STAR!” he wrote.
Trump also cited the collective “knowledge, experience, and TOP degrees” of his newly named CDC leadership team, pledging they would “restore the GOLD STANDARD OF SCIENCE at the CDC.”
Three other appointments were unveiled at the same time. Former Walmart executive Sean Slovenski was named CDC deputy director and chief operating officer, Texas health commissioner Dr. Jennifer Shuford was appointed deputy director and chief medical officer, and FDA official Dr. Sara Brenner was tapped as senior counselor for public health.
Schwartz is a retired Rear Admiral and board-certified preventive medicine physician who once oversaw medical services for the U.S. Coast Guard. She holds three advanced degrees — medicine from Brown University, law from the University of Maryland, and public health from the Uniformed Services University.
Admiral Brett Giroir, who worked closely with Schwartz during Trump’s first term, offered a strong endorsement. “Rear Admiral Schwartz is really an outstanding person in all regards. Her academic training and intellect is second to none,” he said.
“I think the administration has identified someone who is highly qualified, and has a demonstrated track record of competence in being both a good physician and a decent manager,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, head of the American Public Health Association. “Things she’s said have clearly been based on good science.”
Senate confirmation is still required before Schwartz can officially take the helm. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya remains in an acting role while simultaneously directing the National Institutes of Health. Should Schwartz be confirmed, she would operate under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
